Christ Church Staff:

Rector: Fr. J. Scott Barker

Father J. Scott Barker came to Warwick in the summer of 2002 and was installed as the 27th Rector of Christ Church in the autumn of that year. Father Barker has particular passion for church growth, preaching and deeply meaningful liturgy. He is an award winning preacher whose sermons have been published in the Morehouse Press Sermons that Work series.

In addition to his duties as Rector of the parish, Fr. Barker serves on the board of directors of the Episcopal Service Corps and as chair of the Congregational Development Commission for the Diocese of New York. He is a member of Diocesan Council and has served two consecutive terms as an Alternate Deputy to the Episcopal Church General Convention for the diocese. Locally, Fr. Scott chairs the Village of Warwick Ethics Board and the steering committee of Jubilate: The Community Youth Choir of Warwick. Father Barker is an avid runner, writer, reader and music fan.

Ordained a priest in 1992, Fr. Barker previously served as Rector of the Church of the Resurrection in Omaha, Nebraska and as Program Director of Resurrection House, a nationally recognized program for young adult vocational discernment in Christian community which he helped found. He also served as Chaplain of the Brownell-Talbot School, a private Episcopal Day School in Omaha and as Canon Assistant to the Dean at Omaha’s Trinity Cathedral.

Fr. Barker graduated from Yale College in 1985 with a BA in Religious Studies, and from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale in 1992 with a M. Div. in Anglican Studies. He is married and has two children.

Assistant: The Reverend E. Suzanne Wille

I came to Christ Church to serve as Assistant Priest on June 15, 2009 after being bowled over by the enthusiasm and faithfulness of both Father Scott and the Christ Church community; I knew I wanted to begin my ordained ministry with exactly this kind of lively, loving church. I attended seminary at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale where I found my faith especially deepened through study of the New Testament and Systematic and Patristic theology and great worship in our ecumenical chapel. I spent part of the summer in 2008 studying at an Anglican seminary in South Africa, where I focused on the role of the Anglican Church in post-Apartheid South Africa, especially in racial reconciliation and HIV/AIDS work and led contextual Bible studies at a drop-in center for women with HIV/AIDS. I love to preach: I wrestle with the Bible and with God every time I have to go into the pulpit, but I always pray that I will be able to offer a word that helps folks grow in faith and get along in their daily lives.

Before heading to seminary, I taught English in a Catholic high school for girls and coordinated an anti-racism program for the students and teachers of the Chicago Catholic school system. It was while working in the Catholic schools and volunteering at the food pantry at my home church in Chicago that I truly began to understand the Great Commandment. For me, loving God means I have got to love my neighbor—no matter how difficult—and loving my neighbor gets me closer to God.

When I’m not doing church stuff, I am reading novels (often 20th century and British), watching BBC mysteries on my computer while knitting (usually socks since they’re fast), laughing a lot with my partner Tracey, or walking around the village to find all the cool spots.

Suzanne graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with a BA in English and from Indiana University with a MA in English. She most recently graduated from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale with a Master of Divinity and a Diploma in Anglican Studies.
